Downey/Law (the new movie)
Have you seen the new Sherlock Holmes movie?
Since we are working through the originals here, I thought people might want to comment on it.
I’ll add a few comments to this page, and you can respond or not, or start your own comments.

My family and I saw it today, and we did enjoy it. It was pretty close to the original Doyle stories (not in plot, but in spirit). We did think Robert Downey was good as Holmes, and the chemistry with Jude Law’s Doctor Watson was fun.

While it seemed more faithful to the Doyle books, I know people are going to compare it to The Wild, Wild West, and such. Well, that’s not an entirely inappropriate analogy…except that Artie is the main character.
Holmes is like Artemus Gordon in some ways (including, but not limited to, the disguise element), and Watson is somewhat like James West. However, the sidekick role is clearly reversed. If Watson was perceived to be the one in charge, would he be more like James West?

Comparisons to the original stories…we’ll do those here. Be careful, there may be spoilers in this thread.

I have to say, one thing I didn’t like is that they had an “Unstoppable”, not wholly unlike Jaws in the James Bond movies. That doesn’t seem to fit into Holmes to me, who would likely resolve the issue in a first actual meeting.
